C. Blacklock Special

Musical Saws

C. Blacklock Specials are musical saws made to Charlie's specifications in San Jose California. The type and grade of steel as well as the thickness of the steel adds up to a beautiful, clear, and mellow tone.

All the saws have a plain laminated wood handle, which is designed to give more playing edge on the back of the saw. The blade of the saw at the handle end is also made with a special cut which increases the range of the saw.

These saws come in 26, 28, and 30 inch lengths. Charlie says, "The 28 inch saws are the best tenor saws on the market." The 30 inch or "baritone" saw has a few more notes on the lower end of the scale. A 36 inch "mini bass" saw is also available. This saw is very flexible and beautiful sounding but requires more skill to play and is not recommended for beginners. Measurement of the length of a saw blade is along the teeth side.

Charlie prefers to play with a cello bow with black horsehair, although the saw can be played with just about any type of bow. Some players make their own bows. Many old timers liked the black horsehair which may be better for beginners.

Blacklock saws come with a practice mallet and a sheet of playing instructions. Note: Charlie's saws no longer have an etched logo on the blade but are laser printed on the handle.
